Soph Year P4: The name of another girl chosen as one of the '10 Most Attractive Girls On Campus.' for school year 1957-58 was released.

Article 7, Volume 1

This selection was considered a 'Prime" pick by the Virtual Retro Identification committee. Her congenuality was noticeable.  Most, if not all, the teachers admired her zeal and willingness to participate in a variety of activities.

She was a member of the National Honor Society and Cheer Leaders Squad and participated in several other activities. She was known by her nickname, perhaps more so, than her real name.

Her father was one of the first, if not the first, black deputy sheriffs in Nannsemond County.  (continued below in segment titled "10 Most Attractive Girls on Campus")

                                                          Basketball Woes
This year ESH was projected to be one of the top varsity basketball teams in the district.  We were expecting three top players from the previous season to return. The players  had been highly rated by district coaches and the local news media. Also, we had a new varsity coach, Mack Benn, Jr who was moving up from the JV team.

Before the basketball season started, all three of the basketball players I alluded to - were gone.  Like, no longer enrolled at ESH. The players were William "Pep" Goodman, Melvin Hargrove, and John Sparrow.

What happened to them?  I believe, William joined the Air Force; Melvin enlisted in the Army; and John moved to New Jersey.  The lost of these three players dashed our hopes for a District Championship in 1958.

Consequently, the lost of these players enabled Coach Benn to make one of the boldest decisions about what direction  to take the basketball team. His decision proved positive for future teams.  (to be con't in next edition)
