Soph Year P5:Another "10 Most Attractive Girls" name disclosed; basketball team young, but exciting; farewell to football helmets without face guards

Article 8, Volume 1

It is time to disclose the name of another girl chosen as one of the"10 Most Attractive Girls on Campus" for school year 1957-58.  The Virtual Retro Identification Committee classified this selection as "Prime", which  means that she would be included regardless of what criterias were used for making the selections. Only three girls were labeled as "Prime".

These selections were not based on "Pretty" but, more in part, on "Attractive." There is a distinct difference.  Thus, the committee had the authority to consider every girl in the Sophomore, Junior and Senior classes for selection.

She was a member of the Cheer Leaders Squad, National Honor Society, New Business Leaders of America and participated in 6 other school activities. She was chosen to represent the school on the "Quiz'em on the Air" radio program in 1958.  Physically, she took very good care of herself. She was an inspiration to many underclassmen girls on matters pertaining to dress and conduct.

She received a scholarship to Virginia State University and participated in the ROTC program.  Upon graduation she joined the Army and retired after on or about 30 years (maybe more) with the rank of Colonel (or was it General?). Subsequently, she returned to Suffolk to live.

Her mother, a native of North Carolina, was an elementary school teacher.

Who is this girl? (continued below in segment titled "10 Most Attractive Girls on Campus"

After the loss of three top players, Coach Mack Benn, Jr decided to go with a team consisting of mostly sophomores and juniors.  He informed the four senior players that they would not be selected for the squad this year. He told them that he wanted to build a team that would be competitive for at least two of the forthcoming three seasons and beyond.

The seniors reluctantly nodded their head in agreement. Under the current trend, we did not forsee being competitive. Considering, we had a losing season at least 9 of the past 10 years, we had to do something different.

We were tired of being humiliated by Booker T. Washington of Suffolk, coached by Charles Christian and Booker T. of Norfolk and I. C. Norcum of Portsmouth. Vicariously, Coach Benn  told me that if we were going to get beat, we might as well put these young junior varsity players out there and let them learn.

The six primary players on the team were sophomores (1) Paris Carson (2) Ashley Taylor (3) James Ricks and (4) Richard Wheeler. The primary juniors were Sidney Glee and McCoy Ricks.

This team was fun to watch and they played with a lot of hustle. The attendance more than doubled from the previous year.  We finished with a losing record, but we were instilled with high hopes for the forthcoming year.

                                                     Football Team

In the1957 football season,we finished with a winning record for the first time in  7 years (I believe). This success was due, in part, to the school not having a graduating class the previous year.  This was the year that the 12th grade was added.

The signal for 'Fair Catch' was added to the football rules. The rule was not clearly explained to us before our first game. I can still see, in our first game, against I. C. Norcum, William Harrell-Porter waving one hand and trying to catch the punted ball with the other hand. He fumbled the punt on our 12 yard line, Willie Tucker recovered for I.C. Norcum on the ten yard line, and they scored on the lst down after the turnover.  So, we were down by 7 points with only 2 minutes and 32 seconds gone by. We didn't recover, but we almost won.

William was very disappointed.  My comment to William was simple. If you didn't know, well, you just didn't know, so let it go.

This was the season when all players were required to wear, at least a single bar face guard on their helmets. Just think this little tiny bar was supposed to protect our faces from injury. But then, it was better than nothing.  In that game I became the last player in ESH history (undocumented) to play in a game without a face guard of any sort.  I was so excited to get in the game, I just grabbed a helmet and ran on the field for a play. Then I realized I didn't have a certified helmet on.
We were only issued 15 helmets with a bar.  Also, we only had 33 players on the team because we had received only 33 new uniforms for the team.

10 Most Attractive Girls on Campus

The name of the sixth girl chosen for this honor is Carol Boone, a senior from Norfolk Road.

The 6 names disclosed so far are seniors (1) Susan, (2) Ameta, (3) Carol, and sophomores (1) Delores and (2) Rosebud.

The ranking order will not be announced until all ten names have been revealed.

Do you agree with the selections so far?
