Death Notice: James F. Bryant, Jr (aka "Jeff")

James Felmer Bryant, Jr. passed away on Monday, September 12, 2016 in San Diego, CA. He was born in Suffolk and was preceded in death by his parents James and Roxie Eure Bryant, a native of Gates County, NC; brothers, Dallas Kaywood Bryant and Elton Ray Bryant and sister Audrey M. Bryant-Austin.
James grew up on Baker Street in the Pleasant Hills Community of Suffolk.  When he lived in Suffolk he was a member of Pleasant Union Baptist Church on Webb Street.  In California he united with the New Hope SDA on 52nd Street in San Diego.

He graduated from East Suffolk High School in 1961.He was a member of  the varsity football team for four years. Jeff attended Norfolk State College (now University).

Jeff coached the youth softball team in the community's Summer League in 1961.

Jeff developed outstanding work ethics at an early age. In high school he had a daily paper route that required him to get up about 5 a.m., 6 days a week, rain, snow, sleet or hail to deliver newspapers and on school days, come back home and get prepared to walk about two miles  to school. As a senior in high school, he used his earnings to buy a car.

As brothers, near the same age and size, we shared many of the same things, including clothes. Often, our new clothes only belonged to the original owner for one wearing. After the first washing, they would go into the closet or drawers and then become shared property.  We didn't mind.  But this practice was not true with stuff we bought with our own money.

In sandlot basketball, Jeff developed a reputation for his hook shot.  Seemingly, nobody could block it.

When we were in high school, Our father bought us a car to share.  Sharing was not an easy task to adjust to. I mean, there were nights when we both had plans that required the use of a vehicle. To leave me stranded, sometimes Jeff and his buddy, Bobby Bright would push the car out the yard and down the street a few feet before starting the engine and taking off.

It all worked out because I had an effective plan for securing the vehicle for my special events.
Overall, it worked out for both of us.

Jeff moved to D.C. in the early 1960's and worked for a medical lab. In 1976 his job transferred to San Diego, CA.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Nola Love Bryant; a devoted son, James F. Bryant III of Florida; grandson, Jason; brothers, Grady E. Bryant, Sr (Marjorie) of Virginia and Albert "Pete" Bryant (Lorine) of Ft. Washington, Maryland; and sister, Shirley Bryant-Jordan of Suffolk, VA; and other children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.  James was previously married to Shirley Kiser Bryant, a native of North Carolina, the mother of James III; and subsequently, Fronia Tracy Bryant a former or present postal worker in the District of Columbia.

Jeff retired from the San Diego Gas Electric Company.

Visitation will be held Thursday, September 15, 2016, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Anderson-Ragsdale Mortuary. Funeral services will be held at New Hope SDA, 2420 52nd Street on Friday, September 16, 2016 at 12:00 Noon.

My story is based, in part, on my knowledge of Jeff's life on the East Coast.

More details and information about James can be found on the internet at the Anderson-Ragsdale Mortuary, San Diego, CA website or in a local San Diego area newspaper. Also, you can google, James F. Bryant, Jr. San Diego and find more information.

Yes, James was a special brother.  Pray for us.
