French: Could not comprehend in class but different results live in France

Bonjour,

In my senior year I repeated French, a none required subject.  After the first three weeks in class, I realized I made a mistake.  I was not allowed to switch to another class.

Looking back, I should not have been allowed to take the class. The teacher(s) should have barred me.

Well, they did not.

For whatever reason, I just couldn't get the vowels correct.

So, I just relaxed and put my emphasis on my other classes.  After all, French was a selective, unneeded class.

At the end of the school year, Ms. XJ gave me a complimentary D.  I thanked her.

Lesson 2 learned.  Don't repeat unnecessary classes, with the same teacher.

Four months later I joined the Army and was sent to Fort Jackson.

Based on my classes in high school I was trained in business administration.

At the end of training, based on my two years of French study, I was assigned to Etain, France.

Wow! That was great.  I got an opportunity to spend two years in France. Visit Paris frequently.  Great assignment.

Spoken Words in France different from classroom taught French

I soon learned that if I would have made A's in French, it would not have mattered.  Because the spoken words in France were different from the schoolbook stuff.

In classroom the teachers put emphasis on correct pronunciation, whereas, in France precise French was not understood by the general public.

I found the little bit of French I comprehended in high school to be useful.

Because I studied French in high school, I was able to visit at least 5 countries and absorb some of the cultures of those countries.

Looking back, my study of French was very rewarding in real life application.

Au revoir!
