Elton showed leadership skills in high school. So much so, that he was chosen as a co-captain of the football team in 1956 and 1957. He was a starting offensive guard ( jersey number 29) for at least two years.

Death Notice: Dr. Elton Ray "Dink" Jenkins
Dr. Elton Ray Jenkins died Sunday, June 2, 2013 in South Carolina. A native of Suffolk, Va, his parents were the late Luther and Lula Clayton Rodgers Jenkins.
He graduated from East Suffolk High in 1958. Elton was offered and accepted a football scholarship from Allen University in Columbia, South Carolina. He earned a B. A. degree in Physical Education from Allen University in 1962.
He received a master's degree from the University of North Carolina in education and a master's degree from Appalachian State University.
Elton earned and received a doctor of education from Mississippi State University.
He taught in the Charlotte public school system and served as an administrator at the University of South Carolina; assistant superintendent in the Clarendon School District 1 and public school administrator in Warrenton, N.C.
Dr. Jenkins was also an administrator with the Department of Social Services in Sumter and the Lee County Public School system in South Carolina during his career in education.
He received a master's degree from the University of North Carolina in education and a master's degree from Appalachian State University.

Also, he was a starter on the basketball team in his junior year. He didn't play on the team in his senior year.
I was a teammate of Elton on the football teams of 1956 and 1957. Our 1957 team was one of the best teams in East Suffolk High School's 26 year history.
His brother, the late Jerome Jenkins, an East Suffolk High alumni,was also an outstanding student and athlete.
His sister was the late Pauline J. Staton, who died in 2009.
Dr. Jenkins is survived by two sons, Elsandra Jenkins and Demetrius Jenkins of Charlotte; sister, Annie L. King of Suffolk; soul-mate, Thelma L. Postell and a host of family members and friends

A funeral service is scheduled for Saturday, June 8, 2013 at 2 p.m. at the Harris Funeral Home Chapel in Suffolk, Virginia.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his sister, Mrs. Annie L. King at 601 Brook Avenue in the Saratogo community.
