Death Notice: Shirley Mayfield-Edwards

Shirley A. Mayfield-Edwards passed away on Sunday, July 14, 2012 in Suffolk, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alease D. Porter Mayfield and Sylvester Mayfield, Sr.; her husband, Rudolph E. Edwards, Sr; brothers, Sylvester Mayfield Jr. and Callender Mayfield and sister Ella Mae Mayfield-Brown.

She graduated in 1960 from East Suffolk High School. Her homeroom teacher was Mr.Charles E. Jones.

Shirley retired from Hillcrest Convalescence Home (Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation) as a Licensed Practical Nurse.

She was a very active member of Piney Grove Baptist Church. She was a top notch gardener. If you missed seeing some of her gardens through the years, you missed a beautiful sight.

Shirley was regarded as a second mother to many of the younger generation persons. In the community she was easily identified by the name of "Ms. Shirley" or "The Seamstress."  Yes, she could really sew.

In high school, we were classmates. Shirley's nickname was "Bunchie."  She was a member of the New Homemakers of America Club and her ambition was to become a nurse.

When I look at her journey through life, and the ambitions she expressed in high school, I can say that Shirley full filled a lot, if not all, that she dreamed of accomplishing in life.

She was a member of, in the opinion of one, and perhaps most, East Suffolk High School's most distinguished graduating class.  The class of 1960. Surely, when I look at the things Shirley accomplished and the lives she touched along the way, she was a distinguished person.

Mrs. Edwards is survived by one son, Rudolph Edwards, Jr.(Regine), three daughters, Shirron Brisseau (Anthony), Shirnell Baker (Dennis), and Shirnita Davis and a host of other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, July 20, 2013 at Piney Grove Baptist Church in Suffolk, Virginia. Crocker Funeral Home is the contact for details.

On behalf of the Class of 1960, I extend our sympathy to the family of Shirley.
