Bits About the Genesis of East Suffolk High

It is is important for the alumni and interested citizens, to know more about the beginning of East Suffolk High. So, in 2013,we plan to provide a lot more information on the school's origin.

As most, if not all, of us know, the alumni association recently sponsored a stone marker honoring the complex (land) where the school is located. Engraved on the marker is a tribute to a Dr. Johnson. I believe he was the principal of an elementary school, named East Suffolk School. This school from my limited research, did not evolve into East Suffolk High School. As for Dr. Johnson, I haven't seen, as much as a paragraph about his works.

East Suffolk High had only one principal. He was Lowell B. Turner.  In my opinion, we ought to do something in recognition of his 26 years of service. We know him.

During my senior year,  a few selected members of my high school class of 1960 yearbook staff, did some research on the history of East Suffolk.High.  We interviewed some of the living people who were involved in the founding of the school. We posted some pictures from the past in our yearbook. Included were five of the founders or contributors to the establishment of ESH.

Pictures and other information used in our yearbook was preserved by Mrs. Thelma Norfleet for over 40 years in her home.  Some of the pictures were posted by the alumni association on their website.

(Technically, I believe, the material should be in my possession, because I was the editor -in - chief of the yearbook staff. Therefore, by law, I surmise, because the school is no longer in operation, I am the designated curator of the contents. But that is a story for another day.)

In conclusion, I plan to assist in providing more historical information about ESH, and participating in a movement honoring Mr. Turner with a marker dedicated to his tenure as principal.
