Article IX, Volume II
Leroy has more than 16 years experience as an elected official of Suffolk. His achievements are well documented. Stories of his work and character appeared in the Suffolk News Herald on October 27, 2012 and November 4, 2012 respectively.
I have known Leroy for over 45 years. I remember when he moved to Suffolk and married one of Suffolk's finest, Susie Harrell, a young lady in my neighborhood. He immediately got involved in church and civic affairs. He showed great compassion for citizens of the community. During the 60's we were dealing with a lot of civil rights issues including voting rights, underfunded schools, job discrimination, lack of running water, dirt roads and a whole lot of other issues.
Mr. Bennett didn't just stand by and look and wish. He got involved and worked to bring about changes. His work was instrumental in bringing changes in South Suffolk, Pleasant Hill and the whole county (We were Nansemond county back then) and Suffolk City.
His quiet demeanor, I believe, resulted in him not getting the recognition he should have received for his work. However, he found satisfaction in knowing that his work made a difference in people lives.
I believe that his quiet demeanor was one of the reasons his friends eliminated his borough, despite the fact that he was one of the mos popular and effective members of the city council. They figured, I believe, that he wouldn't fight back.
After he was elected to office, he made himself available to all citizens in his borough and the city.
Fellow East Suffolk High grads and citizens of Suffolk, I want you to know that a vote for Leroy Bennett for mayor will be a vote for progress and a man who will work for all the citizens of the city.
Don't wake up on Wednesday, November 7, and regret that you didn't vote.
