Santa Claus Did a Flyover of My House on Christmas Eve. It Brought Tears to My Eyes

I'm Not Depending On Santa Claus Anymore For My Christmas Presents

Tonight I'm going to share a story about my experience many years ago with Santa Claus.

Every year before Christmas I, (or is it me?) and several friends would go down to a local department store and tell Santa what we wanted for Christmas. He would give me and my friends that big laugh and promise to deliver on Christmas Eve. So on the night before Christmas, me and four of my siblings would stay awake virtually all night waiting for Santa to come.

We would jump up if we saw a car passing by or heard an airplane flying overhead. My brother Jeff jumped up one freezing cold Christmas Eve night about 2 a.m. and ran outdoors barefooted, because he thought he glanced Santa landing in the yard.  It turned out to be a deer just walking through the yard. So, all of us went back to bed. About an hour later my sister, Shirley ran on the porch because she heard a noise. We looked in the sky and saw a helicopter flying over. We assumed it was Santa and he was using a helicopter because he had too many toys for his sleigh..

So, again all of us went back to bed in separate rooms, with the assurance that Santa was in the neighborhood, and he would be stopping by our house shortly.  We made sure the fire was out in the fireplace.

Before we went to sleep, we heard the sound of a helicopter flying over, but we did not get up this time because we knew that Santa was in the neighborhood and on his way to our house. Maybe, I surmised, that it was his backup sleigh or a helicopter he was using, because he had a lot of toys to deliver.

When 7 a.m. came, we all jumped out of bed and ran to the Christmas tree to get our presents. Sure enough there was a gift for all of us, but the gifts were a far cry from what Santa had promised to bring.

I got my usual, single shot, cap pistol, an apple, orange, nuts, and candy.  All of us got something, but that something was not what we had been promised by Santa.

About 9 a.m. I stepped outside, and saw one of my friends, who was an only child in his family. He was coming at me, dressed in a full cowboy outfit, with two automatic six shooter cap guns in a holster. I mean, he was decked out. My friend invited me to his house. His front room was loaded with toys.  All I could say was, "Wow, Santa left you more than he did me and my two sisters and three brothers combined!"

After playing with my friend toys for about 20 minutes, I went back home to see if Santa had came back with the toys we requested.  See, me and my friends had visited Santa on the same day and made our wishes known to him.

I asked my oldest brother did Santa come back with anymore gifts for us..

In reply, my brother, Kaywood asked, "Did he come back last year, or the year before with anymore gifts?"  I said no, he didn't. My brother, replied, "Well then."

After sitting down for a few minutes, I reasoned, maybe Santa could not land in our yard, so he left most of our toys at Darnacus house. I decided to go back to Darnacus house and inquire.

I knocked on the door and his father answered. I asked, "Did Santa leave some of them toys for 206 Baker Street, because Darnacus got more gifts than my whole family?" He looked at me strangely, and said no he didn't. As I started to walk away, he called my name. I looked back and he inquired, "Have you had any  eggnog this morning?" I told him no.

So, I went back home and told my siblings the news.

I reasoned, Santa did have a lot to deliver, so  maybe, he just forgot to bring all the toys, and that helicopter we heard, was Santa doing a flyover after he had delivered most of the toys to the other children in the area, and when he came to my family house, he only had a few leftovers.

When his sleigh (or helicopter) was full of toys he flew over our house.

After that experience, we decided to stop depending on Santa Claus for our gifts.

The next year, we picked cotton, chopped grass in the fields and performed other tasks to earned enough money to buy our own toys.

The next Christmas, all of us got nice toys and gifts. My sister Audrey, got the colored barbie doll baby she wanted. You should have seen the happy expression on our faces that Christmas morning.

Audrey made a profound statement, "God bless the child who has his own and from now on we are gonna get our own!"  We all said amen to that declaration.

Yep, there was no more Santa and his flyovers for me and my family!

Let us celebrate Christmas for what it is really about. That alone, toys and gifts aside, should -keep away the pressure and tenseness - and make the season a joyful one.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year or if you prefer, Happy Holidays!
